Spring has been a busy time for the firm.
The firm has been productive in working with our small and medium sized business clients with developing their businesses and improving their business models and practices in line with the client’s vision and mission for their particular business.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group has joined the Idaho Inclusiveness Coalition (IIC). IIC is a non-profit organization focusing on knowledge, understanding and inclusion of diverse communities across Idaho.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group was honored to make a donation to the Red River Pow Wow for their continued efforts to provide Native American cultural experiences through dance and song.
Natalie Camacho Mendoza and Robert Teffeteller attended the Hispanic National Bar Association Inaugural Corporate Counsel Conference in San Diego, California. This was a great opportunity to network with Latino attorneys from all over the country.
Natalie traveled to Washington DC to work with Carol Lewis, CEO of Philanthropy Northwest and other board and staff members to participate in Foundations on the Hill. Natalie lobbied on behalf of the interests of Charitable Foundations throughout the United States.
Natalie continued her work on the advisory committee to Concordia Law School. The school secured a building on 5th and Front Street. The school will open in 2011.
Natalie and Ron Coulter continued their dialogue with major corporations regarding recruitment and retention of diverse workforces.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group took the lead on behalf of the Diversity Section of the Idaho State Bar to join with the Indian Law Section and the Federal Bar Association to organize a CLE at the Idaho State Bar 2010 Annual Conference, July 14- 16, in Idaho Falls. The topic is Tribal Law and Order. Ron Coulter will be the moderator for the seminar.
Natalie was invited to and attended a reception for the new Idaho State University Campus in Meridian. Idaho State University conducts classes for students studying nursing, physician’s assistant careers and pharmacy.
In April, Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group held their first Business Seminar. It was well attended. Robert discussed choice of business entity, business licenses and tax traps. He also spoke of the need to track business operations, when to outsource, how to manage growth and financing. Ron spoke about basic employment law inquiries and Natalie discussed worker’s compensation. The firm was pleased that the majority of the attendees were women and people of color. The firm has a mission to provide legal services to minority and women owned business. Further seminars were requested in particular one that would focus on Native American owned businesses doing business in Indian Country.
Ron, Natalie and Robert met with a student just admitted to University of Santa Clara Law School. She contacted us to ask questions about law school. We met with her to answer her questions, share our experiences, provide advice and encourage her pursuit of a law degree.
Natalie continued her work with the Northwest Area Foundation traveling to Minnesota on a regular basis. Northwest Area Foundation is a Foundation focusing on poverty reduction through asset and wealth building, building leadership capacity around the issue of poverty reduction and impacting public policy affecting poverty.
Robert represented Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group at the University of Idaho Bellwood Lecture featuring Larry EchoHawk, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. Larry EchoHawk, a former Marine, was the first Native American to be elected as a state attorney general. He served as Idaho’s State Attorney General in the 1990’s. He served in the Idaho legislature in the 1980’s, served a Bannock County Prosecutor and was a Chief General Counsel for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group was pleased to sponsor LunaFest / Reel Women of the West Film Festival. The films were short films by, for and about \ women. The festival helped raise funds for the Breast Cancer Fund and the Reel Women of the West’s women’s filmmaking grant fund.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group also supports Cherie Buckner-Webb for Idaho Legislative District 19, Boise. If elected in November, Cherie will become the first African American to be elected to the Idaho Legislature. Cherie is a long time human rights advocate. She helped to create the Idaho Inclusiveness Coalition, has served in the leadership of the Black History Museum and has served the community in several different capacities. She is currently the owner of her own consulting business. Cherie has been a good friend to our firm.
Natalie once again was invited to teach 8th grade social studies classes for Homedale Middle School as part of the Idaho State Bar Law Day. Last year Natalie discussed Brown v Board of Education of Topeka. This year Natalie spoke about staying in school and pursuing a law career as well as a discussion about Gideon v Wainwright and the right to counsel. The class also played a game. A prize was given to the student who could name a President of the United State who was also a trained attorney. The students were engaged and had fun.
Robert and Natalie attended Grassroots and Groundwork Conference in Portland, Oregon. The conference was sponsored by the Northwest Area Foundation. The Conference was about practical strategies and tools working to reduce poverty and build sustainable prosperity. While at the conference we were able to hear from Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children Defense Fund and Paul Saginaw, Co-Owner and Founding Partner of Zingerman’s, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Zingerman’s is now known as Zingerman’s Community of Businesses. Paul Saginaw also founded Food Gatherers, a perishable food rescue program. Paul Saginaw is nationally recognized as an advocate for socially responsible business. While at the conference, Natalie and Robert heard from OWEESTA Corporation. OWEESTA builds local capacity and provides tools for Native community development. Natalie spoke to Tracey Fischer, President & CEO of OWEESTA regarding community development financial institutions (CDFI’s) in Idaho’s and possible future collaborations regarding economic development in Indian Country.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group is proud of our legal assistant, Connie Crookston. She was elected as an officer for BLSA, the association for legal professionals. Connie will serve as Director of Membership and Marketing.
Natalie attended the St. Alphonsus Foundation, Distinguished Citizenship Award Ceremony honoring Brent Lloyd and Albertson’s / SuperValu with the individual and corporate citizen awards.
Camacho Mendoza Coulter Law Group was pleased to donate tickets to the Albertson’s Boise Open presented by Kraft as silent auction items for the Hispanic Cultural Center of Idaho’s Annual Gala fundraiser. Natalie and Connie were also on the planning committee. The event was sponsored by State Farm, Wells Fargo, Hewlett Packard and Fred Meyer. Channel 6 reporter Jackie Orozco was the MC. Additional media support was provided by the Idaho Statesman, KIVI Channel 6 morning anchor team and Channel 12 Fox News.
